Attitude & Heading
An Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) is an inertial sensor installation that provides critical attitude
reference and heading reference information for aircraft. This information can then be relayed to any of the aircraft’s systems that require it, such as flight controls, flight deck displays and weather radar antenna platforms, among others.
An AHRS can also be used in highly dynamic marine and ground environments. Typical applications include platform stabilization, undersea ROV piloting, land vehicle guidance, avionics, and robotic systems control. Solid-state AHRS offers superior reliability and accuracy to the more traditional mechanical gyroscopic instruments.
This AHRS-S305 differs from our other inertial gyro packages because it uses MEMS gyros that are smaller and less expensive than our line of VSG angular rate sensors. This makes the AHRS-S305 more economical and half the size of the AHRS-E304 attitude reference that uses VSG gyros for enhanced accuracy and signal stability.

Here are two applications for our AHRS-S305 sensors. Our website provides suggested sensors for more of our aerospace, land and ocean applications.
Normally, small submersibles are stabilized by the pilot’s actions in response to the orientation of the sub. In the case of an ROV, the pilot is not on board so there is no human “feel” for the orientation of the vehicle. This situation can lead to damage or loss of the submersible. Since the cost of the vehicles as well as the expense of at-sea operations is quite high, a sensor package is necessary that can reliably transmit accurate data on the attitude of the sub.
Remotely operating a submersible requires a full attitude gyro sensor. Heading data is necessary to navigate the vehicle to its destination. Pitch and roll data is also required to provide an accurate picture of the vehicle’s orientation. Other important features of the gyro package are wide bandwidth, low power consumption, and high reliability.
Piloting an aerial vehicle remotely is a challenging task. There is no pilot in the craft to monitor its position with respect to the ground. Controlling the cost of the vehicle is important, but the cost of a losing an UAV due to inadequate sensors is much higher.
A sensor package that can quickly and accurately deliver data on vehicle attitude and heading is crucial. A system built using solid-state gyros is favorable when considering cost and reliability.
